本シンポジウムの開催目的は、（１）沖縄研究のパイオニアである国内外の研究者を招聘し、若手研究者と議論や対話をおこなう場を設けることを通して、 （２）これまでの沖縄学の研究水準および課題を学際的・総体的に把握できるようにするとともに、（３）これからの沖縄学の新たな発展に資することである。
本シンポジウムの重要性は、主に２点ある。
第一に、急速にすすむグローバル化によって、今や、国家の役割や国際社会の秩序のあり方そのものが根底から問い直されている。こうした状況は、沖縄学がこれまで知的に格闘してきた問いと軌を一にするものであり、グローバル化社会がかかえる諸問題を解決するための新しい知見を提供することが、時代の要請として沖縄学には求められている。
第二に、日本の学界は地域研究が発達しており、従来の沖縄学もその一地域としての性格を帯びていたが、近年、現代社会が直面する重層的な課題に対して、異なる研究分野の研究者同士の対話が不可欠であるにもかかわらず、地域研究という枠組みがそれを困難にしている。沖縄を媒介として、各研究領域の枠を突破し、学際的アプローチを提示することが、今後の沖縄学の新たな可能性であると言えよう。
本シンポジウムは、沖縄に対する学際的なアプローチに関心を寄せるものである。たとえば、人文・社会科学と自然科学の対話、戦争の記憶、民衆の語り、沖縄の自立性、東アジアと沖縄、文化の交渉力としての芸能など、さまざまな研究が発表される包括的な場とする。これまでの沖縄研究が築き上げてきた成果を尊重しながらも、研究領域を超えた若い発想を歓迎したい。
3日間の日程では、クロージングパネル、パネルディスカッション（公募）、世界遺産に登録された沖縄の楽劇「組踊」の公演を予定している。
沖縄にかかわる研究者、学生だけでなく、一般の方がたも、現在の立ち位置から沖縄をふり返り、見つめ直し、そしてその将来を考える機会として、本シンポジウムに積極的に参加していただきたい。

About the Symposium
Our objectives in opening this symposium are, 1) to offer an opportunity for dialogue among pioneering and young researchers of Okinawan Studies from Japan and overseas, 2) to grasp interdisciplinarily and holistically both the standard of research within Okinawan Studies, and the challenges the field has faced so far, and 3) to contribute to the development of Okinawan Studies from here on. This symposium has the two following points of significance.
Firstly, due to the rapid spread of globalization, the role of nation-states and the order of international society are now being questioned anew from their very foundations. This situation mirrors the questions with which Okinawan Studies has struggled. Therefore, it is the role of Okinawan Studies to respond to the demands of the times, by providing new knowledge to resolve the many problems faced in this globalized society.
Secondly, area studies in Japanese universities are undergoing development, and until now, Okinawan Studies has existed as one such area. However, despite the fact that dialogue among scholars of different research fields is necessary to challenge the multilayered problems faced by contemporary society, the framework of area studies only makes such dialogue more difficult. The new possibilities for Okinawa Studies in the future lie in using Okinawa as an intermediary to break through the frameworks of each research discipline and advance an interdisciplinary approach.
This symposium places interest upon interdisciplinary approaches on Okinawa. We hope it will provide a space for the presentation of various research based on dialogues between the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, and on such themes as war memories, oral history, Okinawan independence, East Asia and Okinawa, performing arts as a force of cultural negotiation, and much more. While respecting the achievements that Okinawan Studies has made thus far, we welcome young ideas that traverse existing fields of research.
During its three-day program, this symposium will include a closing panel, panel discussions (applications now open), and a performance of kumiodori, a form of Okinawan musical drama, which was selected to become an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
This symposium welcomes participation not only by scholars, researchers, and students of Okinawan Studies but also by the public, and hopes to provide an opportunity from our current position to reflect back on Okinawa’s past, reconsider its present, and think about its future.
